A Cheaper Mobile Phone Service

So I spend way to much money per month on my cell phone and I’m not even a phone person. I’ll send some texts and make a few calls, but I really can’t justify an $80 a month cell phone bill. However, in this day we use our cell phone as our main mode of communication. No matter where we are we can be reached. Gone our the days of checking the answering machine when we get home wondering what we missed. I’ve gotten used to my cell phone and the on the go lifestyle that it allows. However, it would be nice if I didn’t have to pay so much for this lifestyle.

Right now I have an iPhone. It’s an older one, but it’s still a nice phone. I like having an iPhone, but I realize I only use a few features on it. I use talk, text, maps and the mp3 player. Those are the features that have got me out of a pinch and saved me a lot of trouble. A few years ago the iPhone was the only phone with maps and and music beautifully integrated into the ultimate user experience. But, now other phones are catching up and almost any new phone you buy will have maps and music. So now it comes down to needs vs wants. I don’t really need an iPhone anymore. A cheaper phone will have everything I need from a smart phone. Once I realized that it opened the door for many new possibilities.

I found a company called Virgin Mobile that I really liked. They had reasonably priced plans and no 2 year commitment required.  The phones the offered weren’t the latest and greatest, but they were still nice phones and could get the job done. Remember all I was looking for was talk, text, maps and music. Not to mention the latest versions of Android are quite nice. For $45 I could get a better plan on Virgin Mobile then what I was getting with ATT. It’s a savings of $300 for a better plan! So before you purchase you next cell phone look at plans from Virgin Mobile. They won’t give you a free phone, but they will save you money month over month which is what counts. Not to mention you wont have to deal with the awful customer service of ATT.

Watching The Deal Sites

It’s hard to resist a good deal. If something is 50% off I almost feel obligated to buy it, because I would be a fool for passing up such a great bargain.  However, these impulses pass quickly and if we can ignore them we will end up saving a lot of money in the long run. Not to mention we won’t have tons of worthless stuff lying around the house taking up space.

Many of the deal of the day sites such as Groupon, Woot and Living Social rely on impulse purchases and use deep discounts to pull people into purchasing an item. However, if you  can resist the urge to buy impulsively then these sites can save you a lot of money on items that you actually wanted to purchase.

The way to save the most amount of money is to not be in a hurry. With time on your side you can wait for the best deals to appear before you buy. Another way to save money is to know what you want before you go shopping. Make a list of items you needs, then go visit your favorite coupon or daily deal website to see if there are deals on those items.  If you’re not in a rush to purchase these items, there is a good chance they will appear on a daily deal site within the near future.

It’s been really helpful creating shopping lists. It’s saved me a lot of time and money over the last few months. Plus, it forces you to think if you really need something vs a timely want.  So make a list and be patient, that is my advice to you.

Where Will Your Next Meal Come From

Going out to eat is expensive and can eat away at your budget really fast. In fact, when I did a budget a long time ago the biggest shocker was how much money I spent on eating out at restaurants.  This was usually because I didn’t have food at home to make a lunch or  go home and prepare one. Then I was reading a fitness blog and it offered up some really useful advice.  It said to always know where your next meal would come from.  This forces you into action and also allows for better control of your diet.

For example, I know that I will need to eat lunch tomorrow at work. What food will I eat? Where will that food come from? Let’s say I want to eat lunch at home. Then I’ll ask myself what food do I have at home that I can eat for lunch. If I don’t have any good lunch food then I know I need to stop by the store on my way home.  Making food at home or bringing it with you is a lot cheaper and healthier then eating out at a restaurant. So make sure to plan ahead and know what and where you will be eating your next meal. Then take action to make sure it happens.

Back To Eden Gardens

Gardens are a lot of work. Well at least the way traditional gardens are setup and maintained. We till the soil and in a week a vast array of weeds sprout up and dominate the garden unless we pull those weeds on a regular basis. The work of maintaining a garden often times prevents us from even starting a garden in the first place. If gardening were easier then more of us would do it. We would be able to produce our own high qualify, nutrient dense, better tasting fruits and vegetables.

The new method of gardening with wood chips and mulch that this video teaches is eye opening. It will make you want to start a garden of your own immediately.  I wanted to share this video in hopes that someone would decide to plant their own garden and gain access to a higher quality of fruits and vegetables. Not only that, a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction will strike you as you consume your own produce.

Cheap and Delicious Sun Tea

Now that summer is upon us, the days have been getting progressively hotter. Temperatures are sneaking into the triple digits and I find myself often time searching for a refreshingly delicious, healthy and cheap beverage. Most often I go for a nice ice-cold glass of water. It’s quite effective in quenching the thirst and it’s good for your body. Sometimes, I’ll treat myself to a fancy drink from the local coffee shop, but those drinks have loads of sugar in them and are quite pricey. But OMG! they are so delicious. So I’m left with quite the first world problem of what can I drink besides water that is tasty but also healthy.

Most drinks that I thought about had tons of sugar in them. You name the drink and chances are the sugar fairy has visited them. I’m cutting back on consuming sugar, because I believe we consume way to much of it in our American diets and it is causing lots of health problems. I once asked my dentist what is the worst thing for our teeth. He said soda, you know the stuff we fill our big gulps up with and consume to no end.  Enough about soda. What is a good healthy alternative to water? Well,I owe all credit to my neighbor for reminding me of something my mom made all the time. SUN TEA! It’s cheap to make and it’s good for you. Tea is full of antioxidants and stuff, or at least that’s what I remember hearing. I bought a gallon sized glass jar for around $13 and some tea bags for $3 and made a gallon of sun tea. A quick Google search should yield results on how to make sun tea. Now that I have the gallon jar I can make iced tea for practically nothing. Between water, iced tea and the occasional beer I can combat the hot summer heat and stay refreshed.

Oh! Sometimes I make an Arnold Palmer (Iced Tea and Lemonade/Famous Golfer) which is really good. The lemonade adds just the right amount of sweetness. So go forth and drink lots of iced tea. Arizona Iced Tea doesn’t count either. That stuff has just as much or more sugar than soda. Save some money and stay healthier by drinking water and tea this summer.

update: I found this article about how to ween yourself off sugar that I thought was an interesting read.

A Day To Remember

This weekend inbox’s around the United States will be flooded with emails for Memorial Day savings. If you are thinking about buying something online, Memorial Day is a good day to do so. However, Memorial Day is not about sales and BBQ’s. It’s meaning runs deeper. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The words “Thank You” are not strong enough. In fact, words will always fall short when juxtaposed to the sacrifice of the brave men and women of our armed forces.

How Much Do You Spend On Coffee

With a Starbucks or two on every corner I think it’s safe to say that we Americans like our coffee. I’m not exception either. I working on my second cup as I write this. Heck, I think I might even be slightly addicted to the stuff. It gets me going in the morning and helps me jump start the day.  Plus, the world seems to become a much more pleasant place to be after a cup or two of coffee. Coffee is a wonderful thing, but when I looked over my budget I was surprised how much I spend on the stuff. So I’ve been working on a ways to trim my coffee budget and save some money.

I’ll admit $4 for a coffee type drink is a bit crazy. So I usually avoid the the Venti/Large sizes from all coffee shops. Not only that, I switched from always getting lattes and fancy drinks to straight coffee. Plain old joe is always a great deal less than a fancy coffee drink. If you can find a tasty cup of coffee you like it will save you good chunk of money every month.

But don’t stop there. Turns out there is a device you can keep at your house that makes this deliciously caffeinated beverage from the gods.  I got a cheap coffee maker for around $25 bucks and surprisingly it makes one hell of a cup of coffee. Drinking coffee at home has been saving me lots of money. I keep some milk in the fridge and almost every morning brew a pot of coffee to start the day. Let me tell you the smell of coffee in the morning is a wonderful thing. Some coffee makers even have a timer, so your coffee maker becomes an alarm. I might invest in one of these, because waking up to a fresh pot of coffee seems like a mighty nice way to start the day.

Brewing coffee at home lets you try many different of varieties of coffee too. It opens the door and provides the opportunity to try coffee from all over the world. You can buy locally roasted coffee from your favorite coffee shop around town, or you can take to the internet and order some really good coffee online. Some popular places to order coffee online are CoffeeForLess, Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee, Community Coffee and the Coffee Beanery to name a few. You can usually find a coffee coupon to save you a little extra money on your online coffee purchase too. I usually buy a pound or two of ground coffee at a time. If you have a grinder at home then order the coffee beans so you get the freshest cup of coffee possible. Just remember to try different types of coffee until you find what you like best. Learn if you like the light roasts or the dark roasts. I really like the light roast coffees, because they are less acidic which is easier on the stomach. So learn what you like but also keep trying new varieties. Before you know it you will become quite the coffee guru.

Well good luck to you as you find ways to save money on coffee. It’s not always easy and sometimes I still go to the coffee shop to drink some coffee and read a book or something. I mean you still gotta live and enjoy life. Treat yourself to a fancy coffee every now and again, but if you can get in the routine of making coffee at home you will save money and probably get a better cup of coffee.

I Discovered An Awesome Book Renting Service

I get all excited about a book and immediately go to Amazon or Barnes and Noble to buy it. Books are fairly cheap and everybody tells me reading is good for you, so I don’t think twice before pulling the trigger on purchasing a book. However, my actions are starting to catch up with me. On my bookshelf sits many unread books taunting me each time I pass. I always keep telling myself that one day I’ll get to those books. That I will read them and be fascinated by them. It sounds good in theory, but the longer those books sit on my shelf the less likely my eyes will ever grace their parchment pages. I have hundreds of dollars of unread books on the shelf. Not cool. However, there is one bright spot. When I have company over, they see all my books and assume I have read them and have a bunch of smart ideas because of them.

Anyway, it started to bug me that I so many unread books. I try and read as much as I can. I’m definitely not a born reader, but there is so much valuable information in books that I force myself to read. Sometimes that will power fades and the books go unread. If only there was a way to rent books. Oh wait, there is. I’m not sure why it took me 10 years of buying books before I realized that I could just go to the library and rent them. This discovery has saved me a lot of money and space on the book shelf. For instance, I learned about a book that sounded really interesting so I rented it from the library. After about 15 pages I decided I would rather spend my time doing anything else then reading another page from that book. So, I headed to the library and dropped off the book and got myself a new one. I didn’t cost me anything! I didn’t feel pressured to finish the book because I had paid money for it.

So go get your Library card and put it to good use. Plus, the people at the Library were nice and helpful (and won’t make fun of you for trying to scan your gym membership card instead of your library card to checkout a book. Oops! Not sure what book to ready next? The website What Should I Read Next can be a helpful resource. Oh, you could also ask your friends for book suggestions. Some books I do buy because I like to go reference them every so often. I will also purchase my favorite books so I have them around or so I can loan them to a friend.

Mothers Day Deals

Well Mothers Day will be here May 13th. If you don’t have a game plan yet then you better get cracking. If you have the skills then a hand made gift for Mom is usually greatly appreciated. However, if you are lacking in creativity and crafting ability then there are a lot of options to go with online. Or maybe their is some serious distance between you and mom (I’m talking geographical not emotional). In that case you can’t deliver a gift to mom in person so turning to the internet is a great option.
What options are available online you ask? Well there is always flowers. 1-800-Flowers is probably the most popular and well known. However, one of my favorites is Organic Bouquet.

Organic Bouquet’s unique online collection of stylish and one-of kind-products are carefully selected with the highest social and environmental standards and practices. Sustainably grown flowers are gentle on the earth and safeguard ecology, while sustainable, biodegradable, green packaging is innovative and stylish.

Not only do you give someone the gift of flowers, you are also contributing to sustainable business practices.

If you think flowers are to cliche or overrated you might want to look into sending Mom a gift basket tailored to her liking. 1-800-Flowers also sends out gift baskets full of popcorn, cookies, fruit or chocolate. Some places also have baskets full of wine and others delicious things Mom should enjoy. Check out gourmetgiftbaskets.com where you should be able to find a gift basket Mom will surely enjoy.

If you decide to go with an online option then make sure you get a coupon code before you buy. Pretty much all online stores have a Mothers Day sale or provide Mothers Day coupons. Coupon sites like Oopon should have a bunch of mothers day coupon codes for you to browse through. Happy Mothers Day to all the Mom’s out there! Thanks for putting up with everything and being a great Mom.

Value vs Price

We all want the best price. In fact we buy stuff on the fact alone that it’s a good price. Oh, you say this shirt is 60% off. I can’t put it in my shopping cart fast enough. There is nothing wrong with seeking out the lowest price. It’s a good thing. However, we can become to focused on price and forget about what really matters. Value. Something may be 50% off but that doesn’t mean it’s of a good value. It could fall apart and break the next day.

Something might cost more, but it will last longer and be a more eloquent solution to your problem. Even though it was more expensive, in the long run it will be more valuable. It will save you time and headaches because it always works and is easy to use. It will last longer and look better during that time.  I bought a shirt once and owned it 7 years.  Then, one day I wore it to work and someone asked if it was new. On the flip side, I bought a shirt and after one wash it was faded and looked like it spent the last 3 years basking in the sun.

So my advice to you is to look for value when you shop. Value will save you money over the long run. A computer that comes with top notch customer support might be a better value then a cheaper computer that leaves you to fend for yourself. Maybe spending an extra $25 for a shirt that will last 5 years longer compared to another shirt will actually be a better value. The best deals are the ones that minimize price and maximize value. Like buying the last years top of the line camping gear that is 50% off because it’s considered old. That is one of my favorite ways of maximizing value. High quality products for little money.

So go forth and find value!
